User Segmentation
The practice of dividing a customer base into groups that share relevant characteristics — behavior, demographics, purchase history, engagement level — to deliver more targeted offers and experiences. In upsell architecture, segmentation enables different timing, framing, and pricing for different cohorts. A new user requires activation support, not an upsell. A power user approaching a usage limit is ready for an expansion offer. Segmentation turns a one-size-fits-all upsell strategy into a system that respects the user's current state and trajectory. The most useful segmentations are behavioral rather than demographic, because they capture actual product interaction.
Example: An analytics platform segments trialists by the number of reports generated, targeting upgrade prompts only to those who have passed a usage threshold that correlates with long-term retention.
