Foreword by a reader
I run a small online store, and it's been going well, but I did feel a bit stuck.
When I started my business, I thought upselling meant one of two things: a pop-up window on my online store that appeared right after someone checked out, or an email with a discount code that I sent to everyone who hadn't bought anything in a while. Both options seemed a bit tacky, and neither worked very well. I thought the problem was me—that I wasn't aggressive enough, or clever enough, or whatever it is that makes people add one more item to their cart. And I was getting tired of trying things I saw on Instagram and TikTok.
Then the author sent me a draft of this book. I read it in two weekends, mostly on my phone while pretending to watch a movie with my wife.
By the second Sunday evening, I had already changed the timing of my post-purchase emails, renamed my intermediate subscription tier from "Standard" to something that actually sounded like my customers, and added five new attribute fields to my product spreadsheet.
I didn't have to spend a single penny extra on tools; I just had to look at what I already had and organize it differently.
That's what this book does. It doesn't sell you a system or a secret, like most do. What it actually does is show you, with real examples and real numbers, where the purchase triggers are hidden.
The author doesn't shout and isn't pretentious... He doesn't promise that we'll triple our revenue in a week. And that's what I liked most about it.
Each chapter is a record of observation and research. It also reveals the experience of someone who has built things, broken them, and fixed them. He's someone who wants you to skip the breaking part and learn something new in each chapter.
I think this book deserves a place on the bookshelf of anyone who sells anything online.
If you have a small business and you're tired of being told to do more, this book will feel like a conversation with a smarter, calmer version of yourself. Or at least that's how it felt to me.
I'm not an expert, I'm just someone who read it, applied a few pages, and is seeing results every day.
