Usage Threshold
A predefined limit — of projects, seats, reports, storage, or transactions — that triggers an upgrade prompt when a customer reaches it. Usage thresholds are the backbone of product‑led growth monetization. They convert the upgrade decision from an arbitrary sales pitch into a natural consequence of the customer’s own success with the product. The threshold must be set at a point where the customer has demonstrably extracted value from the free or lower‑cost tier and is beginning to feel the constraint as an obstacle to further progress. Too low, and the threshold annoys users before activation; too high, and the customer may never encounter it.
Example: A social media scheduling tool sets its free‑tier threshold at five connected accounts; a user who attempts to connect a sixth account triggers an upgrade prompt tied directly to their demonstrated need.
