Task Boundary
A natural pause point in a user’s workflow — after a save, an export, a publish, or a milestone — where cognitive load briefly drops and the flow state is momentarily suspended. Task boundaries are the ideal placement points for upsell prompts, because the interruption cost is near zero and the user is psychologically available to process a new piece of information. Offers placed at task boundaries are evaluated on their merits; offers placed during active work are reflexively dismissed. The identification of task boundaries requires understanding the user’s workflow at a granular level and mapping the key actions that signify completion of a meaningful unit of work.
Example: A graphic design tool presents an upgrade suggestion on the post‑export screen, when the design work is complete and the user is in a brief window of cognitive availability.
