Structured Attributes
Specific, queryable fields in a product catalogue that describe an item’s characteristics — material, size, compatibility, intended use, technical specifications — in a format that a recommendation engine can read and compare. Structured attributes are the opposite of unstructured product descriptions written in prose; they are the raw material of attribute‑based filtering, faceted navigation, and precise cross‑sell recommendations. The investment in structured attributes pays off in every system that touches the catalogue: site search, recommendation modules, email personalization, and merchandising analysis. Without them, the catalogue is a list of names and prices; with them, it becomes an intelligent database capable of answering complex customer questions.
Example: A fastener distributor that captures thread pitch, material grade, head type, and corrosion resistance as structured attributes can cross‑sell matching nuts and washers with precision; a distributor that only captures “bolt, M10” cannot.
