State‑Based Selling
An approach to upsell delivery in which the timing, content, and framing of an offer are determined by the user’s inferred cognitive, emotional, or situational state, rather than by a fixed schedule or a static customer segment. State‑based selling draws on signals already available in the session — time of day, task completion events, usage intensity, error encounters — and maps them to receptivity profiles. A user in a flow state receives no offers; a user who has just achieved a milestone receives a gentle, context‑aware prompt. State‑based selling does not require artificial intelligence; it can be implemented as a set of conditional rules in an automation layer. Its primary requirement is the organizational discipline to treat the user’s internal condition as a first‑class variable in the upsell design.
Example: A productivity app suppresses all upgrade prompts when the user is in an active editing session and surfaces them only after a save or export, respecting the user’s cognitive state and improving acceptance rates.
