Silent Churn
Customer disengagement that occurs without a formal cancellation. The user simply stops logging in, ignores emails, and fades from the active user base. Silent churn is harder to measure than explicit churn because it leaves no cancellation survey or support ticket. It is detected through declining engagement metrics: session frequency, feature usage, email open rates. Recovering silent churners requires a different approach than retaining active cancelers. Gain-framed offers — gifts, bonuses, surprise credits — can re-engage users who have stopped responding to purchase-framed demands.
Example: A mobile game player who fails a level repeatedly may close the app and never return, silently churning, unless a free gift of extra moves interrupts the disengagement spiral.
