Semantic Anchoring
The process by which a word or phrase sets a reference point that shapes the interpretation of subsequent information. In pricing, the label given to a tier — "Starter," "Professional," "Enterprise" — activates a network of associations that colors the evaluation of the features and price that follow. A label that carries aspirational or identity-based meaning anchors perception at a higher level than a functional label like "Plus." Semantic anchoring operates within milliseconds of encountering the word and is largely resistant to conscious override.
Example: Dropbox tested "Plus" versus "Pro" for its individual storage plans and found that "Pro" resonated more strongly with creative professionals, anchoring the tier as a tool for serious work.
