Pause Option
A retention feature that allows a subscriber to temporarily suspend their subscription — and its associated charges — rather than cancel permanently. During the pause period, the subscriber’s data, preferences, and account status are preserved, and the subscription typically resumes automatically at the end of the pause unless the subscriber intervenes. The pause option addresses a specific churn segment: customers who are not dissatisfied but are temporarily unable to use the service — due to travel, a busy period, or a financial squeeze. It costs the company little in the short term (the revenue was about to be lost anyway) and preserves the option value of the relationship.
Example: Spotify’s cancellation flow offers a three‑month pause as a prominent alternative to permanent cancellation, reducing churn among subscribers with seasonal or situational disengagement.
