Gift Framing
The practice of presenting a commercial offer as a gift or a bonus rather than as a purchase. Gift framing leverages the psychology of reciprocity and the endowment effect: the user receives something of value without being asked for anything in return, which creates a mild sense of obligation and a positive emotional association with the giver. When a subsequent paid offer is then presented, it is evaluated in the context of goodwill rather than in the defensive posture that a direct purchase prompt would trigger. Gift framing is especially effective for recovering silently churned users and for converting trialists who have not yet engaged with premium features.
Example: A mobile game that gives a player three free moves after a failed level is using gift framing; the subsequent offer of ten more moves and a power‑up for $0.99 inherits the generosity of the initial gift.
