Functional Label
A pricing‑tier name that describes a quantity, a feature level, or a comparative position rather than an identity. Examples include “Basic,” “Standard,” “Plus,” and “Advanced.” Functional labels are common in SaaS and ecommerce because they appear objective and easily understood. However, they fail to engage the buyer’s aspirational identity, leaving the purchase decision as a cold comparison of features and prices. Functional labels anchor the conversation on utility, which is easier for competitors to match; identity‑based labels anchor on self‑image, which is harder to replicate.
Example: ActiveCampaign’s “Plus” tier was a functional label that underperformed “Professional” in conversion tests, even though the features were identical.
