Free Trial
A period during which a user can access a product's features without payment, typically lasting 7, 14, or 30 days. The trial's purpose is to allow the user to experience the product's value before committing financially. The architecture of the trial — which features are available, how the user is guided, when the upgrade prompt appears — heavily influences conversion. A trial that asks for payment before the user has reached an activation moment produces low conversion; a trial that waits until value is demonstrated and then ties the upgrade to a functional constraint converts significantly better. The free trial is an activation mechanism, not a countdown.
Example: Figma's free tier allows unlimited personal files and three collaborative projects, ensuring teams experience the collaborative core value before hitting the limit that prompts an upgrade.
