Flow State
A mental state of deep immersion in an activity, characterized by focused attention, distorted time perception, and a sense of control. Coined by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, flow is a fragile and valuable condition for productivity and creativity. Interrupting flow — with a pop-up, a notification, or an upsell prompt — causes cognitive disruption and negative affect. The user's response is not evaluation of the offer but defensive dismissal. Upsells should therefore be suppressed during active work and presented at natural task boundaries: after a save, an export, or a publish, when the flow state has naturally paused.
Example: A graphic design tool that waits until the user downloads a completed project before suggesting an upgrade to Pro features respects the creative flow and achieves higher acceptance.
