Faceted Navigation
A search and filtering interface that allows users to narrow a product catalogue by selecting multiple attributes simultaneously — size, color, material, intended use, compatibility. Faceted navigation depends on high data granularity; each facet is a structured attribute field. When well‑implemented, it reduces the cognitive effort of finding the right product and increases the probability of a purchase. It also reveals attribute gaps: if customers frequently filter by a dimension the catalogue does not capture, that missing dimension is a lost upsell opportunity.
Example: Zappos’ faceted navigation let runners filter by arch support, pronation control, and terrain type, turning a search for “running shoes” into a precise product‑matching experience.
