Emotional Valence
The positive or negative quality of a person's current emotional state. Valence affects decision-making by altering risk tolerance, information processing style, and the weight given to immediate versus delayed outcomes. A user who has just completed a task and received positive feedback is in a high-valence state and is more receptive to an upsell framed as an extension of that success. A user who is frustrated by a bug is in a low-valence state and will likely reject any commercial offer. Context-aware selling uses behavioral proxies — task outcomes, session patterns — to infer valence and time offers accordingly.
Example: A customer support platform detects that a user has resolved a ticket and received a positive satisfaction rating, then suggests an upgrade to a plan with advanced reporting that would "showcase results like this."
