Ecosystem of Complements
A network of third‑party products, services, apps, and integrations that surround a core platform, increasing its value and stickiness. The platform provides the infrastructure — APIs, billing, security, distribution — while developers build specialized solutions that the platform owner could not economically produce alone. Each new complement that a customer adopts increases their switching cost, reduces churn, and often generates upsell revenue for both the developer and the platform. The ecosystem of complements is the most scalable form of upselling because the sales are initiated by customer need and fulfilled by a distributed network of providers, not by the platform’s own sales team.
Example: Shopify’s App Store lists thousands of third‑party applications; a merchant who installs several apps is far less likely to migrate to a competing platform, and each app subscription generates commission revenue for Shopify.
