Cross-Sell
An offer of a complementary or related product presented alongside or after a primary purchase. Unlike an upsell, which typically moves the customer to a higher tier or more expensive version of the same product, a cross-sell broadens the transaction by introducing items from adjacent categories. The effectiveness of a cross-sell depends heavily on the relevance of the suggestion, which in turn depends on the granularity of the product data and the timing of the offer. A well-timed, attribute-grounded cross-sell increases average order value; a generic one is ignored.
Example: An online running shoe store that suggests insoles specifically designed for overpronation, matching the stability shoes the customer just selected, rather than a random water bottle.
