Conversion Rate
The proportion of users who complete a desired action — a purchase, a signup, an upgrade — out of the total who are exposed to the opportunity. Conversion rate is the standard metric for measuring the effectiveness of an upsell, a pricing page, a trial flow, or a retention offer. However, it must be read in context: a high conversion rate achieved by pressuring users may hide downstream churn, while a modest rate that attracts high-lifetime-value customers may be more profitable over time. The architecture of the upsell aims to lift conversion by improving the system rather than applying more pressure.
Example: A SaaS pricing page that converts 4% of visitors to a paid plan may double that rate by renaming the middle tier from "Plus" to "Professional" without any other change.
