Cognitive Load
The total amount of mental effort being used in working memory at a given moment. During an online purchase, a customer expends cognitive resources comparing options, applying filters, entering shipping details, and authorizing payment. When the transaction completes, those resources are depleted. An upsell presented immediately after payment lands on a mind that is temporarily unwilling to process new decisions. The concept, drawn from cognitive psychology, underlies the window-of-decision principle: offers delayed until cognitive load has dissipated perform significantly better. The effect is amplified by decision fatigue, where successive choices degrade the quality of subsequent ones.
Example: Uber Eats moved its cross-sell offer from the post-payment screen to the post-delivery rating screen and observed an 18–25% conversion uplift, a change driven largely by avoiding the fatigue trough.
