Average Order Value (AOV)
The mean monetary value of a customer transaction over a defined period. It is calculated by dividing total revenue by the number of orders. AOV is a foundational metric in ecommerce and subscription businesses because even small percentage increases, sustained across a customer base, compound into substantial revenue gains. Upsell and cross-sell tactics directly target AOV by encouraging customers to add items, choose higher-tier products, or accept bundles. However, AOV improvements must be monitored alongside customer satisfaction; an AOV lifted by aggressive post-purchase offers may carry a hidden cost in future churn.
Example: A coffee roaster that suggests a larger bag size during checkout may see AOV rise from $18 to $24 without additional acquisition cost.
