Tier Naming Convention
The systematic approach a company uses to name its pricing tiers. Conventions can be functional (“Basic,” “Standard,” “Advanced”), comparative (“Plus,” “Pro,” “Enterprise”), or identity‑based (“Starter,” “Professional,” “Business”). The choice of convention is not neutral; it shapes the semantic anchor and the aspirational signal that each tier sends. A convention that is internally inconsistent — mixing functional and aspirational labels, for instance — creates cognitive friction and weakens the ladder’s psychological architecture. The most effective conventions are those in which every label in the sequence reinforces a coherent narrative about who the customer becomes as they move up.
Example: A company that offers “Free,” “Professional,” and “Enterprise” uses an identity‑based convention that tells a story of growth; the same company with “Free,” “Plus,” and “Enterprise” mixes conventions and weakens the middle tier’s aspirational pull.
