Technical Completion vs. Psychological Completion
A distinction central to timing‑based upsell architecture. Technical completion is the moment a system registers a transaction as finished — a payment success callback, an order record written to the database. Psychological completion is the moment the customer feels the transaction is settled — a shipping confirmation, a delivery notification, a project exported. The two events rarely coincide, and the gap between them defines the receptivity trough that makes post‑payment offers underperform. Decoupling upsells from technical completion and recoupling them to psychological completion is one of the highest‑leverage changes in the architecture of an offer.
Example: A payment success event triggers an “order placed” screen (technical completion); a delivery rating submission triggers a satisfaction spike (psychological completion). Uber Eats moved its cross‑sell from the former to the latter and saw an 18–25% uplift.
