Revenue Share
A monetization model in which a platform takes a percentage of the revenue generated by third‑party developers or sellers through the platform’s marketplace. Common rates range from 15% to 30%, with lower tiers sometimes available for smaller developers or long‑term subscribers. Revenue share aligns incentives: the platform benefits when developers succeed, and developers gain access to a distribution channel they could not build independently. The structure of the revenue share — its rate, its stability over time, and any exceptions — is a critical factor in attracting and retaining a healthy developer ecosystem. Sudden or unilateral changes to revenue share terms can trigger developer exodus and reputational damage.
Example: Shopify’s App Store takes a 15% commission on most app sales, generating recurring revenue for the platform while allowing developers to build sustainable businesses on top of the Shopify ecosystem.
