Context-Aware Selling
The practice of adapting an upsell offer to the user's current mental, emotional, or environmental state, inferred from available signals. Signals include time of day, session duration, task completion events, navigation patterns, and device type. A user searching for a hotel room at 11 PM with check-in the next day is in a different state — higher urgency, lower cognitive bandwidth — than a user browsing vacation rentals on a Saturday morning. Context-aware selling adjusts the message, the offer, or the suppression of offers to align with that state. It requires no new data collection, only a deliberate mapping of existing signals to inferred receptivity.
Example: Booking.com varies the intensity of scarcity messaging based on the user's booking window and local time, showing stronger urgency cues when the situation is genuinely time-sensitive.
