Activation Prompt
A nudge, message, or interface element designed to guide a trial user toward the activation moment — the specific action that causes them to experience the product’s core value. Unlike an upgrade prompt, which asks for payment, an activation prompt asks for engagement: “Invite a teammate,” “Export your first design,” “Complete your first project.” Activation prompts are most effective when they appear early in the trial, are contextually relevant to what the user is already doing, and are phrased as helpful suggestions rather than feature tours. Their purpose is to compress the time to value, which is the strongest predictor of trial‑to‑paid conversion.
Example: A project management tool detects that a new user has created a first task and displays a subtle invitation to assign it to a colleague, increasing the probability of multi‑user activation.
